Last Wednesday January 09 2013, I had a wonderful opportunity to facilitate a strategic workshop with Writers in Montgomery County. The meeting was held at Montgomery College, Rockville Campus. The program began around 7: 15 PM.
The main goal of this workshop was to emphasize the importance of developing long-term strategic plan now to shape the future of our writing. Some of the specific learning objectives were:
1. To identify the main driving/restraining forces that impact the writing industry
2. To recognize the major trends that influence the industry, and
3. To use one of the strategic foresight tools to develop a long-term strategy.
As a background to our large, and small group exercises, we engaged in an interactive discussion to answer questions such as:
1. The importance of long term strategy
2. Why writers need a long-term strategic plan?
3. And so on…
During our large, and small group exercises, we used one of the strategic foresight tools- Futures Wheel- to brain storm and practiced on how to strategize for the long-term. From the feedbacks I got after the workshop, it looked like participants enjoyed this informative, interactive, and engaging workshop. If it wasn’t for the time limit, participants wanted to continue the small group discussion, which is also another sign that they liked the theme and method of the workshop.
