Serving Based on Your Uniqueness
Have you been struggling to stand out? Have you wondered why some people and companies are so competitive and always at the top? Are you wondering how you may excel in what you do?
If you said yes to one of these questions, you need to read this blog and watch the corresponding episode. Episode 2 is for you. As an underdog, you cannot afford to be like everybody else. You must differentiate yourself from the crowd. When you do that you remain relevant wherever you go and wherever you serve.
I still remember the old days where I was clueless about my unique propositions. I was passionate, and out there in the open trying to make an impact. I was shooting in all directions and missing every single time. At one point, frustration set in and I sat down to get answers. These were the questions I was asking:
- Why am I in the same place too long?
- What am I missing to go to the next level?
- Why is too much work to get little results?
- And other similar questions?
I’m glad to report to you that the answers to these questions led me to discover my unique edge. All of a sudden, I began to:
- Realize that I’ve a unique purpose,
- Appreciate my disappointments and disadvantages, and
- Embrace the things that made me ashamed. I decided to turn these scars and missteps into my won unique advantage to serve others in unique ways.
Before we proceed, I want you to stop and answer these questions:
- What is your unique purpose? In other words, what is your distinctive mission in life? I’ll come back again on this theme to produce a couple of episodes. For now, I want you to think about this: What is that one thing unless you commit to it, you cannot have peace and rest? What is that one assignment you feel like no one but you will do it? What is that one mission if you accomplish it during your life time, you don’t mind dying the next day? For more, read Part 1 of my book ‘The Highest Level of Greatness: Purpose-Oriented, Vision-centered, and Values-driven greatness. Expect also a book coming out this year specifically designed to empower you to discover, pursue, and fulfill your unique purpose. Believe me, if you haven’t yet when you discover your assignment in life, it immediately decorates your life; it distinguishes you. It gives you a competitive edge.
- Do you have unique gifting or talent? Many people succeeded because of finding, nurturing, and employing their unique talent and/or gifting. I don’t have any. If you have one, that could give you a competitive edge to excel and lead a great life.
- What are some of your unique experiences, disappointments, missteps, and failures? Don’t tell me that you don’t know your unique purpose, and you don’t have unique talent or gifting. Okay, got it. But, don’t tell me that you never stumbled, you mastered every aspect of your life, and never miss stepped? You can use these unique happenings to serve others. You have learned some insights, developed wisdom as you made the mistakes and came out of the trouble you were in or, at least, you have now some tips that may help others who find in the same spot you were to avoid your mistakes, learn from your experience, and overcome the challenges they are facing.
If you have not yet, pick your unique lane. It is not crowded and allows you to excel. As far as you are serving your community, the world around you, your clients, and/or customers based on your unique path, you flourish and tap into your unlimited potential.
If you like what you have read so far, I encourage you to watch Episode 2 of Dr. AZ Show. In this episode, I pointed out how successful people and companies carved their own unique brand to remain competitive even in bad times. I also shared 3 potential areas where you could find your uniqueness. I also shared my own experience of how I have been attempting to serve based on my uniqueness.
If you have not checked it out, in the previous episode, I talked about the importance of becoming a potential conscious. However, understanding that you have great potential is the foundation. Every human being has almost the same potential as you do have. That is not your unique proposition to the world. The knowledge of your potential is key to anything meaningful you would do going forward. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, you need to know your uniqueness.
The underdogs I studied were very clear about their unique edge. They picked their lane. Hundreds, thousands, and in some cases millions followed them because they were on their unique path without being duplicates. They flew at a wavelength no one had flown.
If you don’t pick your lane and tap into what makes you unique, it is an uphill battle for you as an underdog. You cannot shine on a road crowded by others who have better resources, connections, and portfolios. Your uniqueness is your competitive advantage.
Think about some of the successful startups, which were underdogs when they began their journey. The ones that succeeded and outsmarted their competitors were those that had unique propositions. They didn’t have the money and platform, to begin with. Think about the uniqueness Apple brought to defeat the giant IBM? Think about Singapore, a tiny city-state. They were underdogs in their respective fields. But, they found their uniqueness that made them competitive and today Apple is one of the most successful corporations in the world while Singapore has the highest personal GDP in the world.
What do you have as an underdog that positions you to shine? All underdogs who transformed themselves into greats had weapons that disarmed their goliaths. What is your unique ‘weapon’ that sets you apart?

Underdogs have a messed up past and maybe present. Otherwise, they won’t qualify as underdogs. Unfortunately, many underdogs preoccupy themselves with what they don’t have and what is missing in the now. Few underdogs focus on their potential, who they can become, and where they are heading. Such underdogs, when they interact with themselves in their mind and with other people, they base the conversation on not the realities but their potential.
Huge difference! If you allow the small self-critic voice in you or wrong people who don’t genuinely love and care about you, they may want to interact with you based on who you were & what you have done- mainly your mistakes and missteps. Refuse to participate!
Regardless of where you were and what you have done both good and bad, this is a clean new chance you got this year. Because of your limitless potential, you aren’t bound to your past. You can rewrite your past, shape today and the future if you believe in the greatness seed that dwells in you. In the New Year, be alert and superconscious as you interact with yourself and others. It should be based on who you CAN BECOME and where you are heading, not based on the ‘beating’ you took the previous day, week, month, year, or decade.
However, I understand that it isn’t easy to look at yourself on the other side of the mirror every day knowing that you were ‘beaten’ badly or ‘knocked out’ the previous day and/or had many misfortunes, missteps, and disappointments last month or year, and you are now up for another fight where you aren’t sure of the outcome yet. Likewise, it is frustrating if you look at the guy on the other side of the mirror who doesn’t have yet the head start he/she needs to enter into that business, profession, or competition.
But, the underdogs who believe in themselves and the potential they carry, they acknowledge the uphill battle they face and recognize the scars they retained in the past. However, they will tell you also that they’re happy that they are still standing and alive after that bad beating, knockout, and disappointments.
What makes them special? They stand in front of the mirror every day leaping and licking their wounds but refuse to complain, let alone quit. They look at a bruised underdog on the other side of the mirror but at the same time, they don’t see a beaten-down person who is finished but someone who will win in the end. They stand there thankful because they have another fighting chance, another day to rewrite their past defeats and shape their today and future. It is a choice, and we all should choose like these underdogs.
Refuse to settle for less than your true potential, which awaits you to unchain it! Your future is glorious! And, it can begin this year, no need to wait years to manifest your greatness. Start releasing your potential one-day at a time.
Those underdogs who vowed to tap into their potential always have a better future. They don’t cut short themselves by presenting themselves, negotiating, and dealing based on their past. Your best days are still ahead. You have untapped potential. Don’t give up too soon, lower the bar, fold your tent, and act like you are tired or retired. New Year, New & better You!!!
Watch this episode where I shared some insightful analogies and simple but powerful steps you can take to remain focused on your potential. As a typical underdog, I also shared my own stories about how I dealt with the small self-critic voice within, disappointments, belittling, and so on.

New show for the underdogs
Have you noticed that almost all the great ones in history and now were underdogs before they began their greatness journey? Have you appreciated how they turned their misfortunes and inadequacies as fuel to attain greatness? What about you? Have you stopped and identified yourself with the right underdogs, underdogs who broke the limits themselves and others put on them?
I consider myself a typical underdog. I have disadvantages in many areas of life and found myself as an underdog in many places and times. Let me just give you some examples for now. To start with, I was born and raised in one of the poorest villages in Ethiopia. Second, no one from our family ever finished high school, let alone go to college. I grew up without access to libraries and basic communication media such as TV.
Education, success, greatness, and concepts like these weren’t the ones I grew up hearing. We were very happy and enjoyed life one day at a time because we didn’t compare ourselves with others nor have access to know what is happening in the rest of the world. Retrospectively, we were even reckless. We chewed Khat- a green leaf illegal in the US, on a daily basis, drinking alcohol, and doing other crazy stuff. Looking back, I wonder how I even survived to tell the story. Many of my friends couldn’t…
If you never had experience with this substance before, let me give you some background just for fun, not for you to try it 🙂 Don’t try this at home!!! When you chew chat, within an hour or so, you begin to experience euphoria, which may last for a couple of hours where you are happy, excited, talking, daydreaming, and fantasizing. Afterward, you start to be quite, experiencing mild depression. When we hit the latter state, that was when we go out to drink so that we could break the depression. And, you can imagine what one does when he drinks too much alcohol and at night. I leave that for your active imagination 🙂 Life looked beautify back then because we didn’t know better. We didn’t have clarity about where we were going. We didn’t have hope for the future. We didn’t have any clue about the rest of the world, about our human potential, and what the future holds for us.
Forget about where I started. When I stepped into the shore of the US in 2005, I had many disadvantages. On top of the cultural shock I experienced, I had difficulty to adapt to the system and felt inadequate. I had never used a credit card, metro, and had never driven a car at all (though I had a license). My accent was so thick that people asked me to repeat myself again and again even if I had an advanced degree 🙂 In short, I found myself inadequate, disadvantaged, and on the wrong side of the fence. You may not have my kind of disadvantages but you know what I’m talking about if you’re an underdog like me:
- You could be an immigrant away from home and experiencing culture shock or
- You could be someone who is familiar with continual failure, rejection, and defeat or
- You could be someone who never had a chance to go to college or live in a nice home or drive a new car or
- You may be someone who has been told you cannot make it, you don’t amount anything or
- You could be a person who beat yourself up because of the countless mistakes you have made and the stumblings you have been experiencing or
- You may be someone who faces insurmountable challenges and goliaths and not sure when you are going to experience your next break or what have you.
By the way, you wouldn’t have heard of me and read this blog if I stopped there, blaming my fate, other people, circumstances, and indulged in a pity party. Of course, it isn’t a comfortable place when you find yourself an underdog. It is scary, painful, and full of uncertainty. You may ask, how then could you be able to come out of that? How come you are now having multiple degrees, your own show, five books, coach and train leaders in government agencies and major corporations in the US? You may wonder what helped me to turn my misfortunes into advantages and now inspiring other underdogs?
Well, I don’t think it is because I’m special, highly intelligent, bold, or strong than anybody else in my situation. The only thing I had during those dark hours was hope, vision, and undying commitment to persevere and grow continually. These helped me to outlast the setbacks I was experiencing and kept going by turning my disadvantages into advantages. What about you? Do you have hope, vision, and the right mindset, and commitment to outlast your setbacks by growing constantly? If so, that is what you need. And this show is designed for underdogs like you. It Transforms underdogs into greats; it turns underdogs into great ones…
- If you are reading this blog and wondering what a hell I’m talking about;
- If you felt bad for me;
- If you never felt left behind, failed, or intimidated because of your inadequacies;
- If you have great connections and every major need of yours met before you even ask;
- If you’re well educated, with a nice family, and comfortable in life throughout your life;
- If you don’t have any physical, mental, and/or spiritual struggles at all, well, you cannot relate with people like myself, underdogs.
However, if you identify yourself as an underdog, I honor and respect you. You didn’t give up on yourself and your loved ones and withdrew from life’s fight. But rather, you are working on yourself to become better. That is why you are reading this blog. Many of your peers gave up too quickly. Not only you didn’t quit because of the enormous disadvantages you are facing, but you also didn’t get mad in life, others, and circumstances. You took responsibility to grow and in turn, beat the odds. Congrats! To play my little contribution in your growth as you turn yourself from an underdog into one of the great ones of the 21st C during your lifetime, I have good news for you!
I’m going to launch a YouTube channel with a Podcast for people just like you.
